On the second day, ICIMOD launched an e-course on Springshed Management, introduced by Shri Cyril V. D. Diengdoh, IAS, and Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, to support capacity building on NbS and water governance. Community members also shared experiences from successful field-level interventions.

During the conference, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between ICIMOD and MBDA, strengthening collaboration on research, capacity building, and scaling Naturebased Solutions in Meghalaya and the Himalayan region.

The conference underscored the importance of high-integrity carbon markets, incentive-based conservation, and regional collaboration through platforms such as ICIMOD and the proposed Shillong Framework.

Summarising the deliberations, Shri James T. Kharkongor, Deputy Project Director, MBDA, stated that Meghalaya is well positioned to translate NbS principles into action and informed that the State, in collaboration with ICIMOD, will work towards developing a comprehensive NbS framework in the coming months, inviting stakeholder inputs.

PR No. 8/2025-26 Dated Shillong, the 24th January, 2026

Meghalaya Builds Strong Primary Care Backbone as Doctors Graduate from PGDFM Programme

Shillong, January 24, 2026: Today the 24th January, 2026 Meghalaya marked a key milestone in strengthening its primary healthcare system with the convocation of the first batch of doctors from the Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine (PGDFM) Meghalaya Batch 2023, a flagship capacity-building initiative supported by the National Health Mission (NHM), Meghalaya, in academic partnership with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore.

The convocation ceremony was held at Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong, where 22 government in-service doctors practising at the primary and secondary levels of healthcare, as well as 3 practising doctors from Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, were formally awarded their postgraduate diplomas. The programme reflects Meghalaya’s sustained focus on investing in human resources for health and equipping frontline medical professionals with advanced, community-oriented clinical skills.

The PGDFM programme is designed to strengthen the clinical, diagnostic and decision-making capacities of doctors working in district hospitals, community health centres and primary health facilities. By training doctors in comprehensive family medicine, the initiative aims to improve continuity of care, reduce avoidable referrals, and enhance access to quality healthcare services, particularly in rural and geographically challenging areas.

Dr Sampath Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, who joined the event virtually, emphasised the value of the training programme organised by CMC Vellore and Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, particularly for doctors deployed in remote areas. He drew a parallel with states like Bihar and Chhattisgarh, which have successfully implemented similar training programmes on a large scale to upgrade their primary healthcare workforce. Hinting at a similar future roadmap for Meghalaya to standardise this advanced qualification for all primary healthcare doctors, he congratulated the graduates and acknowledged the collaborative leadership driving the state’s health sector forward.

Shri Ramkumar S, IAS, Health Secretary, highlighted that the primary motivation behind the PG Diploma in Family Medicine is the “three A’s” of public service: Accessibility, Affordability, and Availability. He noted that in a state like Meghalaya, patients often have no alternative to public health facilities, making it crucial to equip doctors with specialised skills to bridge the gap between general practice and specialist care. He added that the training reduces the need for referrals by enabling doctors to diagnose and treat conditions earlier, thereby strengthening the community health system. He urged the graduates to become brand ambassadors for the programme, noting that their enhanced capabilities will directly improve the quality-of-service delivery to the public.

Shri Ramakrishna Chitturi, IAS, Managing Director, NHM Meghalaya, emphasised the pivotal role of the graduating doctors in transforming Meghalaya’s healthcare landscape. He acknowledged the state’s improving health indicators, such as increased life expectancy and reduced maternal mortality, crediting these gains to collaborative efforts between the government and partners like CMC Vellore and Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital. Highlighting that the administration’s primary function is to support frontline workers, he urged the graduates to pursue lifelong learning. Meghalaya Launches January Edition of Monthly Farmers’ Market ~ Farmers, agri-entrepreneurs and local tech-based aggregator come together in Shillong to strengthen direct farm-to-consumer linkages and boost local livelihoods

Shillong, January 24, 2026: The Government of Meghalaya has launched the January edition of the Monthly Farmers’ Market to strengthen farmer incomes and improve agri-marketing through a direct and transparent farm-to-consumer platform. Organized by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, with support from the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission, the market was held in Shillong on Saturday, 24 January 2026.

The January edition highlighted seasonal crops, particularly oranges and pumpkins, showcasing Meghalaya’s winter harvest and enabling farmers to sell fresh produce directly to consumers. The market featured 30 curated stalls, including 17 farmer stalls, agri-entrepreneurs, and participants from allied sectors such as fisheries and animal husbandry. A live kitchen, managed by Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) members trained at the Institute of Hotel Management, Shillong, demonstrated value-added dishes made from oranges and pumpkins. The VDVKs recorded sales exceeding Rs 20,000. Visitors experienced a farm-to-plate model through freshly prepared orange-based and pumpkin-based dishes using locally sourced ingredients. The partnership with SOMOI, a local homegrown quick-commerce app in Shillong, highlighted how such initiatives support local entrepreneurs and farmers by enabling them to reach a wider consumer base through new marketing channels. The Farmers’ Market enabled the sale of local products across Shillong through SOMOI’s online platform.

As a result of strong participation from walk-in consumers as well as orders placed through the SOMOI app, all participating farmers were fully sold out by the end of the market, returning with a positive and rewarding experience while the public appreciated the freshness, transparency and direct farmer engagement.

Guided by the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma to make agriculture a sustainable and dignified livelihood, the Monthly Farmers’ Market is a strategic State initiative focused on farmer empowerment and strengthening the local economy. It promotes fair pricing, supports value addition and entrepreneurship, and provides consumers with access to fresh, safe, affordable local produce through a convergence-based approach.

Shri Harish Chandra Choudhary, IFS, Principal Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of Meghalaya, said that having been born and brought up in a farming community, he continues to practise farming on his ancestral land. Referring to the wide variety of produce on display at the market, he said Meghalaya has immense potential and emphasized the need to scale up farming activities.

For farmers, the initiative has opened a direct interface with consumers, enabling fair pricing, greater visibility, and confidence in market participation. A farmer, Victoria Tongper from Mawshun, Pynursla, a member of Iatreilang VDVK formed in 2021, appreciated the government for its continued support through various initiatives and expressed confidence that platforms such as the Monthly Farmers’ Market would provide greater opportunities for farmers to directly reach consumers and improve their incomes.

Shri P. S. Thangkhiew, Chairman, Meghalaya Farmers’ Empowerment Commission, said, “The initiative would not be confined only to the capital but would gradually be extended to other major district headquarters where farmers do not always get the opportunity to sell their produce at remunerative prices.” He stressed the need to ensure that the present initiative remains farmer-centric and welcomed the involvement of platforms such as SOMOI, while thanking the Hon’ble Chief Minister and concerned departments for their continued support towards farmer welfare.

Smti Saloni Verma, IAS, Director, 1917 iTEAMS, while expressing her gratitude to all concerned, including the farmers, stated, “If we can create one additional avenue where we combine our fresh agricultural produce with some tourism value and make it a farmers’ market place once a month, that’s the ambition, which every people, be it local or a tourist can look forward to.” She thanked all the farmers, who had come from far and wide, to set up their produce.

The event was attended by Shri Harish Chandra Choudhary, IFS, Principal Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of Meghalaya; Shri P. S. Thangkhiew, IAS (Retd.), Chairman, Meghalaya Farmers’ Empowerment Commission (MFEC); Smti Saloni Verma, IAS, Deputy Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Director, 1917 iTEAMS, Government of Meghalaya; Smti Bansara Mylliemngap, Director, Directorate of Horticulture; Shri S. PR No. 5/2025-26 Dated Baghmara, the 21st January, 2026

54th Meghalaya Day celebrated with grandeur at Baghmara

Baghmara, January 21, 2026: The picturesque town of Baghmara, headquarters of South Garo Hills, witnessed a vibrant celebration of 54th Meghalaya Day on Wednesday, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the state.

The state celebration was graced by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma and his Cabinet colleagues Deputy Chief Minister Shri Prestone Tynsong and IPR Minister Shri Lahkmen Rymbui, along with other MLAs and MDCs of the region. Senior state officials including State Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, and Director General of Police, Smt. Idashisha Nongrang, were also present on the occasion along with hosts of officials and people of the State.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that it was through divine blessings that the people of Meghalaya were granted their own land, their own State and their own identity.

“With confidence, determination and a strong will, we will achieve the goals we have set for ourselves,” he said.

The Chief Minister paid tribute to the leaders who spearheaded the movement for statehood through non-violent, persistent and unwavering struggle. Recalling the period when the demand for statehood was at its peak, he noted that despite differences in tribe and community, the people were united by a shared dream and common purpose.

Expressing concern over present-day divisions, particularly on social media, he said that negativity and hatred between communities were deeply troubling.

“Sometimes I see negativity and hatred, and it makes me ask myself whether we have forgotten what our leaders stood for,” he said, adding that the elders and mothers of Meghalaya had prayed for the creation of the State and that those prayers were answered.

The Chief Minister informed that he had received a personal letter from the Prime Minister of India conveying warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Meghalaya on the occasion of Meghalaya Day. He said the letter fondly recalled late P.A. Sangma and acknowledged his immense contribution to Meghalaya and the nation, and that he was honoured to convey the Prime Minister’s message to the people of the State.

Acknowledging the contributions of countless individuals over the past five decades, he said that while their efforts have brought Meghalaya this far, the journey ahead remains challenging and requires continued cooperation and shared responsibility.

Speaking on development, the Chief Minister said that Meghalaya has witnessed significant growth over the last seven to eight years, recording an average growth rate of around ten per cent over the past three years, placing it among the fastest-growing States in the country. However, he emphasised that growth figures alone do not define success.

“I have never been a big fan of foundation stones or MoUs,” he said, adding that real development must be felt by people in their everyday lives.

Referring to the CM-Connect programme, the Chief Minister said that while problems will always exist, mindset makes all the difference.

“If we decide in advance that something cannot be done, then we have already failed,” he said.

He also emphasised the need for clearer planning at the district level, with defined targets and visions, stating that without direction there can be no meaningful journey. He said districts must clearly understand their role in contributing to the overall growth of the State.

Describing the decision to celebrate Meghalaya Day in South Garo Hills as deeply meaningful, the Chief Minister said the district is the home of late Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya and one of the principal architects of the State. He said celebrating the occasion in Baghmara was a fitting tribute to his legacy and a reaffirmation of the values on which Meghalaya was founded.

Sharing recent developments, the Chief Minister informed that the second phase of the water supply project for Baghmara, amounting to Rs. 140 crore, had been cleared just a day earlier, calling it a major blessing for the people of the region. He assured that issues related to road connectivity would also be taken up.

Expressing concern over the condition of the Baghmara Civil Hospital, the Chief Minister promised to the people of the district that he would personally ensure complete transformation of Baghmara Hospital to make it one of the best and a model hospital in the state.

Stressing unity, the Chief Minister said that the destinies of the people of Meghalaya are inseparable and divinely ordained.

“He has a plan for us,” he said, urging citizens to rise and play their part in realising that vision.

Recalling a time when Meghalaya consistently ranked at the bottom of development indices, he said that instead of despair, the Government chose to see it as an opportunity.

“Being at the bottom gave us the chance to change things,” he said, adding that despite limited resources and immense pressure, sectors such as education are already witnessing transformation.

Reaffirming his commitment, the Chief Minister urged all citizens to be prepared for the long journey ahead and to walk forward together to make meaningful progress.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the celebration itself was historic, noting that in his entire career, this was perhaps the first time such a major official Statehood Day celebration was being held in Baghmara.

Acknowledging that South Garo Hills has long been considered one of the most backward districts of the State, he said the Government is making concerted efforts to ensure development reaches the last mile, particularly through improved connectivity and infrastructure.

Highlighting progress under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, he said there is renewed hope and optimism among the people of South Garo Hills as the State marks 54 years of Statehood. He informed that road connectivity from Shillong to Baghmara is about 60 per cent complete, with remaining works to be taken up shortly.

Urging citizens to remember and honour the forefathers who laid the foundation of Meghalaya, he called for unity and a positive mindset, stating that constructive criticism is welcome but negativity serves no purpose.

IPR Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that Meghalaya Day is an important occasion to reflect on the State’s journey and to chart the path forward.

He said that prior to 2018, Meghalaya was often perceived as just another small hill State, but sustained engagement, reflection and people-centric governance under the MDA–I and MDA–II governments have brought visible change. He described the alliance as one driven by dynamism and purpose.

He said leadership is now visible across all regions of the State, not confined to Shillong or Tura alone. He highlighted initiatives promoting unity through language learning programmes, including basic Khasi in Garo areas and basic Garo in Khasi areas, as well as skill development initiatives such as the Community Integrated Skills Learning programme aimed at enhancing employability and dignity of labour.

He concluded by urging all stakeholders to contribute to the State’s development, stating that unity strengthens progress, while pulling each other down hinders growth.

Meanwhile, State Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, in his keynote address, emphasized balanced growth. He said development cannot be meaningful if confined to a few regions and that what development means for Shillong must equally apply to Baghmara. Highlighting Meghalaya’s natural wealth and traditions of community-led conservation, he said the State offers valuable lessons in sustainable development and harmony with nature.

Referring to Vision 2032, he said it is not merely aspirational but backed by planning, accountability and execution. He highlighted achievements across sectors including road connectivity, education infrastructure, agriculture, power reforms and entrepreneurship initiatives such as CM Elevate and YES Meghalaya. He concluded by stressing the need for continued perseverance and collective effort to build a prosperous, peaceful, inclusive and resilient Meghalaya.

Earlier in his welcome address, Vijay Kumar Mantri, Commissioner and Secretary, IPR Department, said that Meghalaya is charting its own development path with equity at its core, noting that regional disparities in performance and outcomes have been reduced from nearly 40 per cent to about 15 per cent through sustained and targeted interventions.

During the programme, the Meghalaya Day Awards and Governor’s Police Medals were announced in recognition of exemplary service and outstanding contributions across various fields. The Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards were also presented to 21 employees by the Chief Minister.

A video titled "Rise Meghalaya" was screened highlighting the State’s development journey.

Cultural performances featuring traditional Khasi, Jaintia and rarely seen Atong & Ruga dances of South Garo Hills were presented at various intervals, showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of Meghalaya.

The programme concluded with acknowledgement and note of gratitude by B. S. Sohliya, Secretary & Director, Information and Public Relations, followed by the rendition of the National Anthem, while earlier singing of the State Anthem was led by the Khmih Choir, Shillong.

On the whole the State Day was a celebration of shared dreams, aspirations, and collective identity of the three major tribes that together form the social and cultural fabric of Meghalaya. It highlighted the importance of unity, inclusive development, and preserving the unique traditions of the state while moving forward on the path of progress.
