TWO DAY BLOCK LEVEL SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENT FAIR CONCLUDED

Shillong, August 9, 2004: The two day Block Level Science and Environment Fair organised by Umling C&RD and sponsored by the SCSTE, Meghalaya in collaboration with the District Planning Officer, Nongpoh ended on August 6, 2004 at St. Paul’s Secondary School, Nongpoh.

Speaking on the occasion as the Chief Guest, the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Mr. W.L.Lyngdoh cited the importance of acquiring proper scientific knowledge so as to ward away superstitions and blind belief, which hinders progress and harmony. Stating that scientific awareness is a must, particularly among students, he hoped that the 2 days Fair proved to be beneficial and also encourage them to recognise the forces and uses of science in their day to day life.

The programme ended with prize distribution to the winners in different competitions including exhibition, painting, essay writing, quiz, debate and singing.

OFFICER’S CLUB FISHING COMPETITION AT MAWTNENG

Shillong, August 9, 2004: The Officer’s Club, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh organised a fishing competition for the Officers of the District at the Community Fishing Pond, Mawtneng on August 7, 2004. Meghalaya Minister of Taxation etc. Mr. J. D. Rymbai, was the Chief Guest on the concluding function, while the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District, Mr. W.L.Lyngdoh presided over the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rymbai lauded the initiatives of the Deputy Commissioner in revitalizing the activities of the Club wherein it is able to hold such a competition. Referring to the popular saying that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, he urged upon the officers to undertake more of such activities, which will foster better relations with the locals of the area. At the same time, Mr Rymbai also lauded the Dorbar Shnong for its efforts in maintaining the pond as a public fishing spot.

It may be mentioned that the competition was held for raising funds for the handicaps of the District and aptly the winner, Mr. E. Rynjah, Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, who bagged the first prize of Rs. 2000/- donated the whole amount to the cause.

On the day, a Memorandum by the Dorbar Shnong was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
