DISTRICT CO-ORDINATION COMMITTEE MEETING HELD

Shillong April 8, 2004: The District Coordination Committee meeting of East Garo Hills, District was held yesterday at the Circuit House Conference Hall, Williamnagar to discuss issues relating to encroachment of Government land, handing over of departmental buildings to the Statistical Department, approach roads connecting to ITI complex, JNV and District Sports office complex etc.

The meeting decided to form a Committee with the concerned District Officers including Civil Administration, Urban Affairs and PWD (Roads and Buildings). The Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills District, Mr E P Kharbhih, discussed the need of immediate attention towards maintenance of roads in the District, especially those which are vital and sensitive in terms of connectivity and matters relating to law and order situation.

CARRYING OF ARMS PROHIBITED

Shillong April 8, 2004: As per the order of the Election Commission of India, the District Election Officer, Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh, has ordered that no person other than an authorized person can carry arms within the "neighbourhood" of a Polling Station on the Polling Day.

Any person(s) contravening the order shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine or with both.

CHIEF SECRETARY VISITS NONGSTOIN

Shillong April 8, 2004: With a view to gear up the election machinery in West Khasi Hills District, the Meghalaya Chief Secretary, Mr P J Bazeley, visited Nongstoin today accompanied by Mr G P Wahlang, Commissioner of Divisions, Mr P S Thangkhiew, Chief Election Officer, Mr L Sailo, DGP and Mr B L Buam, DIGP.

In his address to the officials of the District, Mr Bazeley stated that election is a sacrosanct duty of each and every Government servant in which no mistake either unwillingly or deliberately will be tolerated. He urged upon the officials to get themselves well acquainted with the Code Of Conduct and Representation of People Act to ensure free and fair polls. With the past experiences of the officials at the field level, he hoped that the ensuing elections will take off smoothly.

Briefings were also delivered by the Chief Election Officer, Mr P S Thangkhiew, Principal Secretary Home and the Director General of Police, Mr L Sailo.

The Chief Secretary also inspected the Counting Halls and the Strong Room situated in the DC’s Office.
